Nukunuku Whakairo: Carving with the Camera is a kaupapa Māori underground visual repository that explores unconventional and boundary transmigration through creative practice and expression. This time-based (Māori, indigenous, conceptually non-linear, time concept) media incorporates moving shadow and light carving methods juxtaposed with dramatic non-linear pūrākau (source/storywork/relation) visual sequences.
Artist Bio
Elliott, Zena
Elliott is an interdisciplinary artist and creative researcher specialising in painting and sculpture. Their work explores the intersections between popular culture and identity. Elliott’s work stimulates discussions about fluidity, visibility, Māori sub-cultures and cultural identity.
Barrett, Tia
Barrett (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Maniapoto, Waikato) is an artist who predominantly works with lens-based mediums. Her art is deeply influenced by a desire to connect with whānau, whenua me ō ngā tūpuna. Finally, Barrett incorporates taiao-inspired installation and the traditional medium of mōteatea into her contemporary practice.
