Te Waharoa Mārama -

Hemi Stewart

Te Waharoa Mārama is more than just an entranceway—it is a threshold between worlds, a portal that guides the body and spirit from one space or state of being to another. This sacred gateway embodies transition and transformation, inviting all who pass through to journey with intention.

The amo rise proudly on either side, strong and purposeful, lifting the maihi skyward. One amo whispers of ancient voyages across Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, etched with the legacy of the Lapita people, adorned with Māori rock art and the timeless presence of native flora and fauna. The second amo is rooted deeply in the whenua of Aotearoa, a tribute to the land’s strength, stories, and enduring spirit.

Above, the maihi shimmers with ever-changing hues—bold, vibrant, and alive. Its shifting colours mirror the rhythm of our modern world: fast, diverse, and in constant motion. It is both a reflection and a reminder of the evolving nature of identity, culture, and connection.

Te Waharoa Mārama stands not just as a passage, but as an artwork of encounter—where past, present, and future meet.

Artist Bio

I am a Contemporary Māori Artist, born and raised in Te Whanganui-a-Tara and now based in Tauranga. With over 25 years in the building industry, my creative journey has always run parallel to my profession, driven by a deep passion for Contemporary Māori Art.

My work is inspired by the visual language of both ancient and modern Māori art forms, woven together with a strong connection to te taiao—the natural world. I draw on the practical skills and material knowledge gained through my building career, incorporating them into my artistic practice. This hands-on approach allows me to explore new materials and methods, bringing form to concepts rooted in whakapapa, whenua, and our evolving identities.

Problem-solving is at the heart of my creative process. I embrace the challenges that come with developing new works, constantly pushing boundaries and exploring ways to connect the traditional with the contemporary.

My goal as an artist is to create works that not only bring joy but also invite reflection—encouraging deeper thought about our relationships with each other and with the environment around us.
